Twitter sued for nonpayment of over $136,000 in rent
According to court documents filed Thursday in San Francisco State Court, Twitter is being sued for nonpayment of $136,260 in rent on its San Francisco office.
The building's landlord, Columbia Reit - 650 California LLC, informed Facebook that if rent was not paid by Dec. 21, the company would be in default. Twitter is currently headquartered on the 30th floor of the Hartford Building, a skyscraper on the outskirts of San Francisco's Financial District.
In 2017, Twitter signed a seven-year lease for the office space.
Elon Musk, the company's new owner, has taken drastic measures to cut costs since purchasing Twitter for $44 billion in October.
According to The New York Times, the platform has not paid rent on any of its global offices in weeks, including its San Francisco headquarters in the Civic Center.
Private Jet Services Group, LLC is also suing Twitter, alleging that the company refused to pay for two charter flights in October worth $197,725. Last month, the suit was filed in New Hampshire District Court.
Musk has implemented a number of changes, in addition to cost-cutting measures, since taking over Twitter earlier this year, including laying off half of the workforce and ceasing enforcement of COVID-19 misinformation rules. He announced last month that he would step down as CEO once he found a suitable replacement.
